CROP Walk of Bethlehem

Our appreciation to the 25 people from St. Andrew's who walked (and those who sponsored a walker) in the Bethlehem CROP Walk of October 2009.

We look forward to seeing all of you again next October!

The 2009 CROP Walk was Bethlehem's 25th year of participation. $ 23,172 was raised by all churches for 2009, with $5,795 distributed locally to Victory House, New Bethany, West Bethlehem Food Bank, Trinity Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, Northeast Ministries, New Jerusalem Food Pantry (Hellertown) and the Nazareth Area Food Bank. Plus: $ 285 of that local amount went to the Pennsylvania Ave. Interfaith Food Pantry.

Bethlehem raised $20,625 in 2008. St. Andrew’s contributed $4,100 of that. The following local ministries benefited: New Bethany, Northeast Ministries, Victory House, New Jerusalem Food Bank, Trinity Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, West Bethlehem Food Pantry, and Nazareth Food Pantry.

Though one quarter of the CROP Walk proceeds benefit local hunger efforts, the rest of the money is used to aid refugees, victims of natural disasters, and to fight hunger worldwide.

In 2010, we hope to have new participants as well as welcome our former walkers. You don’t have to travel the full course. There is a shorter route.

Contact Liza Holzinger at 610 248-2873 or eholzinger@bapl.org if you plan to participate.

Natural disasters in Haiti and other countries have demonstrated the need for your donations.

CWS is providing basic health services, tools, water and sanitation assistance to those who have lost everything and must rebuild.

The needs are enormous. Please give generously today. Visit www.churchworldservice.org.

Church World Service (CWS) is the relief, development and refugee assistance ministry of 35 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations and communions. CWS was started after World War II to respond to the refugees flooding Europe. It has spread to over eighty countries working through the religious establishments in each one. Around the globe, CWS supports sustainable self-help development, meets emergency needs, and addresses the causes of poverty and injustice.

Within the United States, CWS resettles refugees, assists communities in disaster relief, promotes fair and environmentally sound policies, provides educational resources and offers opportunities for communities  to help others with the TOOLS OF HOPE & BLANKET Program, CROP Walks, and the "Gift of the Heart" Program.

CWS is primarily staffed by volunteers who are trained in disaster relief or can address the worldwide hunger issues caused by war, famine, social injustice and poverty. Using volunteers keeps administrative costs very low. Volunteers pay for their own expenses as they work side by side with refugees, victims of natural disaster, and impoverished people throughout the world.

CROP Walks are held in cities and towns across the nation each year. Each community uses one quarter of the funds raised to help combat poverty and hunger on a local level.

Education and Advocacy: Raising awareness about poverty, AIDS/HIV which is epidemic on the African continent, human rights, and peacebuilding.

Social and Economic Development: Working with grass-roots organizations and faith-based partners to implement programs to alleviate hunger, improve health, insure livelihood, and provide education.

Emergency Response: Provide assistance to the most vulnerable people and communities in the aftermath of natural disasters.

Immigration and Refugee Program: Help resettle refugees in the U.S. and help refugees returning home or living in prolonged settlement situations.

Mission Relationships and Witness: In partnership with councils of churches across the U.S. and around the world to share resources and bring an ecumenical approach to mission worldwide.

Only 4.4% of all funds donated are used for administrative costs. Visit Church World Service's website at www.churchworldservice.org.
